Membra - Always Blue (Official Video)
When I’m not filming documentaries, I perform as the experimental pop artist Membra. It’s a wonderful outlet for multimedia creative expression, so when it came time to make a music video for my album, I took the opportunity to let loose on practical effects, animation, and experimental film techniques.
Walking through Prospect Park, I saw daisies of all sizes, and it sparked the idea: They have a face, they look like a person. I live in Brooklyn so I’m surrounded by flower shops all carrying daisy’s. I began by sending the daisy through a whirlpool, then I buried it in sand. After that I had it submerged in black paint. Eventually, I wanted to feel like I was traveling with the flower, so I connected it via armature wire to the lens. Moss, sticks from the park, some left over wool, a halloween heart, and my own eyeball helped send the flower through a transformation. As abstract as the video is, it tells a story, and filming it made me a better filmmaker in the process.
